Plenty of work for skin cancer surgeons for decades to come

Working in my clinic, diagnosing skin cancers, I photographed this man out of the window. This was during the incredible heat wave of July 2013.

It is of course rational and humane to advise people to avoid burning in the sun, but IMO don’t hold out too much hope. That’s why I believe that effort to reduce melanoma mortality should concentrate on early detection. This is not to disparage well intentioned efforts to reduce sun behaviour, but use your own sense to decide whether it will make that much difference. Sunshine is just too pleasurable!
