Early diagnosis of melanoma skin cancer is the key to patient survival but most skin lesions presenting to the GP are benign. They cannot and need not all be referred on the 2 week wait. Dermoscopy with adequate training is proven to help deliver effective lesion triage by effectively screening out the majority of lesions which are benign: a win-win-win for patients, doctors and commissioners.
This course is designed for doctors and nurses with a reasonable knowledge of dermoscopy who wish to consolidate and sharpen their skills. It is aimed at SPRs/trainees in dermatology and plastic surgery, GPs with an interest, specialist nurses and other doctors whose work brings them into contact with patients who are concerned about skin lesions. NB we will not turn keen beginners away but would advise doing some pre-course study or it may be too difficult for you.
Suggested on line resources for pre-course work include the International Dermoscopy Society, dermoscopy videos on YouTube (just type ‘dermoscopy’ in the search bar) by renowned world experts like Argenziano, Zalaudek, Marghoob, Braun, Habif and McColl, and the Primary Care Dermatology Society web site at http://www.pcds.org.uk .
